Dume watches the sunset, dreaming of riding that perfect wave. Jonas was listening to the Beastie Boys when he drew this. The phrase 'serious jams atop holiday hams' suddenly popped into his head, and it had to be drawn. Rand likes swing music. He'd never cut loose like this in front of Dume, though.
Rand takes one of his numerous cigarette breaks. Dume doesn't only surf; he's pretty much tried just about anything involving any kind of ridable board at one time or another. Rand, however, doesn't like being airborne unless he's in a plane. Rand finally loses it, once and for all. Trust us, someday this will happen in the comic. It's inevitable.
Dume & Rand cool down on a hot summer day, with unforeseen consequences. Jonas did this while idly wondering what Dume, Rand and Sylmar might wear in the winter. Looks like they're doing some kind of holiday street performance. The tragic fate of all nachos.


The evolution of Dume & Rand, 1998 - 2005.

 
The very first picture of Dume ever drawn. He's come a long way, and could've turned out very differently. This picture, originally done for a T-shirt that never got made, pretty much established Dume's present incarnation -- a dumpy, crazed little otter. Rayce was enamored of Dume from the beginning, so Jonas did a number of gift sketches of the early version of Dume in Rayce's books. Here's Dume hitching a ride atop Rayce himself.
Dume served as a sort of unofficial mascot on flyers for a SoCal BBQ event for a few years. This is the 2000 flyer. Here's the 2001 flyer. Here's the 2002 flyer.
One of the earliest pictures of Rand in his modern incarnation. Both his and Dume 's designs have lost some height over the years. The original version of the 'pilot' strip. Dume waits patiently for the high-five (four?) that will never come.
One of Dume's most secret, passionate dreams is to star in a Tarzan movie. Dume's definitely feeling the love. Rand's just smelling the B.O. Sylmar and Dume rock out in their undies. Sometimes you just gotta.
